Acanthus scrolls run round the serpentine top of this luxury chess table and down the knees of four cabriole legs, with a felt-lined drawer in the carved apron for the 32 wooden pieces. It is 60 × 60 × 70 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ × 27.6″, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess table that looks like it has always been in the room. The top waves on all four sides with leaf scrolls cut in relief along the border and the coordinates on small brass roundels beside the two-tone squares; the apron is carved to match and the legs curve out to scrolled feet. The drawer pulls out from the front on a brass pull.

The pieces are turned in light and dark wood, 16 a side, and live in the drawer between games, so the table stays set. At 70 cm it sits with two ordinary chairs — five minutes before dinner, two hours after it. The legs bolt on after delivery.
