Leaf scrolls are carved round the top of this luxury chess table, and the 32 pieces on it are turned in wood and mounted in cast brass — crowns, collars and lion-head knights. The board is 60 cm across, the table 70 cm / 27.6″ high on four tapered legs, with an apron drawer; handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess table where the top does the work. Acanthus curls into each corner over a dotted ground, a scroll cartouche sits at the centre of every side, the coordinates rest on small brass roundels, and the apron below is carved in a diamond lattice. The legs are grooved down their length and taper to the floor.

The pieces are the reason to look twice: pale and red-brown wooden bodies, each ringed with a cast brass collar and topped with a brass crown, mitre or lion's head. They keep in the drawer at the front on a brass pendant pull. Sit at 70 cm with an ordinary chair and the game is at the right height.
