A cast brass lion's face sits in a carved roundel at each end of this luxury chess table, and a carved lion's head crowns each cabriole leg above a paw foot. Drawers in the apron hold the 32 gold-toned bronze pieces. It is 60 × 60 × 68 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ × 26.8″, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess table for someone who wants the room to know it. Acanthus scrolls fill the serpentine border round the inlaid field, the coordinates sit on small brass roundels, a bead runs along the rim, and the apron is carved to match with a brass pull on each drawer. The legs are separate carvings, mane and all, bolted on after delivery.

The pieces are openwork castings in a gold tone — crowned kings and queens, horse-head knights, pierced bishops and rooks — standing on turned wooden bases, pale on one side and dark on the other. Between games they go in the drawers, and the table keeps its place.

Is the lion on the top carved or metal? Metal. Each lion's face is cast brass, set into a roundel carved in the border at either end of the top so it sits inside the wood. The lions on the legs are carved from the beech, mane down to the paw at the foot.
