Lions everywhere on this luxury chess table: a cast brass lion mask in a carved roundel at each end of the top, and a lion's head carved at the knee of each cabriole leg, down to a paw foot. Three drawers hold 32 brass-mounted wooden pieces. Top 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess table that presides over a room. The top is shaped in a soft serpentine on every side, acanthus scrolls fill the border round the inlaid field, the coordinates sit on brass roundels, and the apron below is carved to match with a brass pendant pull on the front drawer. The legs are separate carvings, bolted on after delivery.

The pieces belong to the lions: turned wooden bodies, pale for one side and red-brown for the other, each ringed with a cast brass collar and topped with a crown, a mitre or a lion's head for the knights. One drawer at the front and one each side take the whole set on felt.

Are the lion masks on the top carved or metal? Metal. Each is a cast brass lion's face set into a roundel carved in the border at either end of the top, so the mask sits inside the wood rather than on it. The lion heads on the legs are carved from the beech itself, and the knights on the board carry brass lion heads to match.
