Luxury Carved Chess Set with Woven Ornament
Run your thumb across the border of this one and you will feel why it exists. The panels are carved as woven ornament — strands passing over and under each other, cut deep enough that the shadows do the work — with floral scrollwork running between them. It is slow, careful cutting: every crossing has to line up or the eye catches it instantly, and on a board this size there are a great many crossings.
Under the carving it is a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field in maple and walnut, and inside, when it closes, a felt-lined interior that holds all 32 turned pieces without letting them knock together. It folds on metal clasps to half its width and lifts by a built-in handle. That is the pleasure of this carved chess set: it looks like something that ought to stay on a stand, and it packs down like a working board.
