This is the wooden chess set that gets used. No scene, no motif — just the lattice cut fine across the frame, the coordinates carved beside the two-tone squares, and the outline waving gently along each side. Two brass clasps hold it shut, and the handle sits under the hand where a case handle should.

Inside, both halves are lined in black felt, so the 32 turned pieces — light and dark — lie in the case without a mark on them. Open it on a kitchen table, a park bench or a train seat; at 40 cm the squares are full size for a proper game.
