A single incised line round a plain frame is all the decoration on this classic travel chess set; the rest is squares and grain. It is 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ open, 15 × 30 cm folded, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for people who think the game is the decoration. The frame is smooth, stained a warm brown, with the coordinates cut small beside the squares and nothing else on it; the squares are two tones of wood, not paint. It closes on bronze hinges and a clasp and goes in a coat pocket or a rucksack.

Open the clasp and the inside is drawn as a backgammon field in line work, with an eternity sign, the old swirling wheel, in each half. The set ships with the 32 turned chess pieces only, light and dark; add checkers and dice of your own if you want the second game. A first board, or the one that lives in the car.

How big are the pieces? Small, to match the squares — each square is a little under 3 cm and the pieces are a few centimetres tall, turned in light and dark wood. They store in the bag, not inside the board, so nothing rattles when it is closed.
