Twelve straight sides make the disc of this luxury Armenian chess set, a dotted diamond lattice covers everything outside the squares, the coat of arms of Armenia sits cast in metal at each end, and the 32 pieces are carved. 60 cm / 23.6″ across, handmade in Armenia from dark-stained beech, folding in half, with felt inside and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that answers a round table without giving up a square field. The board sits in the middle of the disc with its coordinates on brass discs, the net round it is a fine diamond lattice with a dot at every crossing, and the arms — eagle and lion holding the shield — are a small cast disc in a round recess at each end. The pieces carry ribbed bodies and maned knights, pale wood for one army and deep red-brown for the other.

Bronze hinges fold the disc into a half-round and clasps hold it shut; the reverse opens onto two wells of black felt where the carved army lies between games. Chess only under the lid, at a size that gives the pieces room to stand.
