A diamond trellis, scored into the wood with a dot at every crossing, covers the frame of this chess set — a 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ folding board with a waved edge, the chessboard across its outer faces and two black felt-lined trays inside that hold all 32 turned pieces. Handmade in Armenia, with a bag.

The net on this wooden chess set is cut in fine lines rather than raised, so it reads as a soft texture across the dark-stained frame and the drilled dots catch the light; the edge curves in and out along all four sides and the coordinates are cut into the border. The squares are inlaid pale and brown wood, wide enough for a full-height king.

The pieces are turned in pale and dark-stained wood, the kings tipped with a finial, and they ride inside the board itself: shut, it is a slim waved case on brass clasps; opened the other way, the two felt trays take the whole army, so nothing knocks about in the bag. There is no second game inside — the interior is storage.
