There is no resting place on this board. Interlaced ornament runs edge to edge across the walnut — strands passing over, under, over again, all of them circling a carved ornament at the center. The carver never once stopped to leave a plain patch, which is exactly the kind of decision that separates a good board from a masterful one.
Follow one strand with a fingertip and you will lose it, find it, lose it again. Cut into solid walnut — the wood the workshop saves for its best work — the pattern shifts as the light moves, so the whole lid looks different in the morning than it does mid-game at midnight.
