On this handmade Russian backgammon set the map of Russia is inlaid in carved wood and set into swirling green marbled epoxy resin, so the outline sits solid in the middle of something that looks like weather or water or a very good malachite tabletop, depending on the light. It is the largest country on earth, and here it fits under one hand.
Green is an inspired choice for it — not the blue of an ocean but the colour of forest, which is what most of that map actually is. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is underneath, ready for the game that fills Russian kitchens, dachas and courtyards from one end of the map to the other.
