Red pomegranates hang in a pale carved tree on the lid of this luxury Armenian backgammon table — the tree of life in relief on a stippled ground, a cast brass tree at each end of it. Unfold the top on its cabriole legs and the field is beneath: 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

Closed, the wooden backgammon table is a side table: a twisted-rope ring round the tree, carved lattice across the rest of the top, the apron and the leg knees, a brass tree on the apron, and a felt-lined compartment under the swinging top. Unfolded, the field has pale inlaid points with arrowhead tips, a fluted sun-wheel in each half, a vine band on the rails and a round recess at each corner for the dice cup.

The checkers are pale and dark wooden discs, each set with a cast brass tree of life, with a dark dice cup and two dice. The legs unbolt and the whole table packs into its own plywood crate.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? It is. The tree is relief left standing when the ground round it was cut back and stippled, the rope ring and lattice are carved into the beech, the points and sun-wheels inside are inlaid, and the trees on the lid, apron and checkers are cast brass. The top is hinged: swing it aside for the felt-lined compartment or unfold it flat for the game. Nothing is printed.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Dust the carving with a soft brush, wipe the flat wood with a dry cloth and keep the checkers in the compartment beneath the top.
