Leafy scrolls are carved in relief around the whole frame of this chess set, and Mount Ararat rises above the cut-out carry handle. The board is 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained walnut brown, with 32 wooden chess pieces in a fitted tray and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for the table you keep set up. The scrolls run the full way round the frame, cut deep enough to throw a shadow, with a dotted ground between the leaves, and the twin peaks stand in relief in the band above the handle with rays around them. The coordinates are carved beside the squares, and the edge is shaped in scallops.

Open it on the bronze clasps and every piece has its own slot in a black fitted tray, so a king never rolls loose. The 32 pieces are turned in light and dark wood. Full size on the table, it still folds in half and lifts by the handle — a board for a father or a grandfather who plays properly.
