Luxury Backgammon Table with Lion Head
The legs are lions. Carved heads at the top, paw feet at the floor, and on the closed lid a large lion's head looking straight out at the room with a smaller bronze lion to either side of it. This is not a subtle table and it is not trying to be — it is a wooden backgammon table for someone who wants the furniture to have a pulse.
Open it and there is a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field, 32 checkers in beech and walnut, the dice cup sitting ready. A handmade backgammon table quietly changes how often the game gets played, because the setting up is already done. It stands there looking like it means business, and sooner or later somebody sits down opposite you to find out whether you do.

Carvers have been putting lions on furniture for about as long as there has been furniture worth carving, and always for the same reason: a lion at the corner of a table says the thing was built to stay. Cut by hand, every head comes out a little different — the set of the jaw, the fall of the mane. Look closely at yours and you will find the tool marks that make it a face instead of a pattern.
