A lion's face fills a round frame at the centre of the lid on this luxury backgammon table, its mane carved in heavy locks, with a cast brass lion at each end and another on the apron; a carved lion's head sits at the knee of each cabriole leg with a paw at its foot. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

Shut, the wooden backgammon table is a side table with carved lattice over the lid, apron and leg knees and a felt-lined compartment under the swinging top. Unfold it across the frame and the field is ready: pale inlaid points with arrowhead tips, a fluted sun-wheel ringed with scrolls in each half, a vine band along the rails and a round recess at each corner for the dice cup.

Pale and dark turned checkers with ringed tops, a dark dice cup and two dice come with it; for shipping the four lion legs unbolt and everything goes into the plywood crate.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? It is. The big face on the lid is relief carved from the top itself, the heads and paws are carved from the legs, the lattice and vine band are cut into the beech, the points and sun-wheels inside are inlaid, and the small lions are cast brass. Swing the hinged top aside for the compartment or unfold it flat for the game. Nothing is printed.
