Lilies in arches — a carved arcade of them, one lily to every pointed arch — frame the field of this chess set on a square-edged board stained dark. 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 turned pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set with a Gothic frame at a size that suits most tables. The arches share their columns so the band runs unbroken round all four sides, each lily standing on a stippled ground; the coordinates are carved into the rim beside the inlaid squares. The 32 pieces are turned in two woods, pale and near-black.

It folds shut on bronze clasps. Turned over and opened, the inside is carved as a backgammon field with a flower wheel in each half — the set ships with the chess pieces only, so add your own checkers for the second game.

Are the arches carved? Carved. Each arch and its lily is cut into the beech in relief with the ground stippled behind it; the coordinates are cut into the rim; the squares and the points inside are inlaid wood. Nothing on the board is printed.

Are backgammon checkers included? No. This set ships with the 32 chess pieces; the inside is carved as a backgammon field, so checkers and dice of your own make it a two-game board.
