The outline of this chess set is its ornament — a deep serpentine sweep on all four sides — with a fine diamond lattice over the dark frame and a plain inlaid field inside it. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 turned pieces, felt inside and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set you notice by its silhouette. The edge curves in and out in bold scallops with a moulded lip, the frame between edge and field is cut with a fine lattice of crossing lines and dots, and the squares are inlaid pale and dark with the coordinates carved beside them. The 32 pieces are turned, pale on one side and near-black on the other.

Bronze hinges take the fold, two clasps take the close, and the reverse opens onto a pair of felt-lined wells that swallow all 32 pieces. Full-size on the table, half its width on the shelf.
