Two armies of cast warriors in a bronze finish stand on this luxury travel chess set, whose dark squares are poured in royal-blue epoxy between carry handles cut through each end of the pale beech frame. 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ open, handmade in Armenia, folding shut on brass clasps with a bag for the pieces.

This is the wooden chess set with the smallest footprint and the biggest cast. Archers for the pawns, riders for the knights, fluted columns for the rooks, robed kings and queens — each cast in metal with a bronze finish, one army on pale turned bases and the other on dark. Under them the blue swirls differently in every square, and the coordinates sit in brass discs along a stippled band.

The handles are cut clean through both ends, and the board folds to a slim case on bronze hinges. Open it the other way and the inside is carved as a backgammon field — line-work points and a sun wheel in each half — though the set ships with the chess figures only.
