Luxury Carved Interlace Backgammon Table — Handmade in Armenia

Strand passes under strand in the woven interlace disc that fills a beaded round at the centre of the lid on this luxury backgammon table, with a whirling sun in a beaded round at each end, twisted-rope borders between them and a carved scrollwork apron below. On cabriole legs, 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

This wooden backgammon table is all carving and no metal: the lid's three rounds sit on a lattice ground inside a rope frame, the apron carries a leafy scroll on both sides, and each cabriole leg has a carved leaf at the knee. Unfolded, the field is inlaid — pale points with arrowhead tips and an interlace round in each half — with a scalloped rail at each end and a recess in every corner for the dice cup.

The set is completed by wooden checkers, sixteen pale and sixteen dark, with a dice cup and two dice; under the swinging top there is a felt-lined compartment for them, and the legs unbolt when the table has to be shipped.

Is the carving real? It is. The knot, the suns, the beads, rope and scrolls are relief left standing when the beech round them was cut back, and the points and rounds inside are inlaid in pale wood. Swing the hinged top aside for the compartment or unfold it flat for the game.
