Luxury Walnut Backgammon Set - Carved Lattice and Blue Epoxy
Most carving takes wood away from a surface. This takes it away entirely. The woven lattice on the lid of this luxury walnut backgammon set is cut clean through the board — openwork, not relief — and blue epoxy resin sits beneath it so the colour rises up through every opening. The effect is closer to a window than a carving, and floral scrollwork runs around it to the edge to hold the whole thing together.
Cutting a lattice through solid walnut is not a forgiving job: every strand has to hold once the wood around it is gone, and one over-cut ruins the panel. What you get for that risk is a board that changes completely with the light — deep and quiet by day, lit from within under a lamp. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing, and inside is a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field in the same dark walnut. It is a wooden backgammon board people notice from the doorway and keep looking at once they have sat down.
