Diamonds of deep blue epoxy alternate with diamonds of warm walnut right across the closed lid of this luxury backgammon set, edge to edge, in a harlequin pattern that is really the same idea as the board waiting inside: two colours, alternating, playing against each other. The resin sits flush with the wood, so the whole surface is one clean plane and the pattern lives in colour alone rather than in relief.
It is a genuinely modern-looking object, which is unusual in a workshop that mostly carves saints and mountains — and it is a useful thing to own for exactly that reason. Not every room wants a monastery on the table. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field appears, blue points running down the walnut. At 6 kg / 13.2 lb this wooden backgammon board has serious presence, and no two of them are ever the same, because resin never pours twice the same way.
