This is the chess set for a study with wood panelling and a good lamp. The brown stone is shot through with pale veins that wander across the frame and the dark squares, and the light squares are a cloudy cream that glows under a lamp. A thin pale line frames the field, each coordinate sits on its own small brass ornament, and the pieces are openwork bronze with crowned kings and horse-head knights, on bases of the same stone.

Cool, heavy and dead flat, it stays exactly where you set it and looks as if it has always been there. The pieces go back in the fitted box between games. For the classicist — the desk that already has a fountain pen on it.
