Thirty-two ornate cast-metal pieces stand on this luxury travel chess set, one army on white resin bases and the other on turquoise, over dark squares of the same marbled turquoise epoxy poured into pale unstained beech, with a carry handle cut through each end. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia, with a bag.

This is the wooden chess set where the pieces and the field were coloured from the same pot. Each turquoise square is its own pour, clouding between sea-blue and green and polished level with the wood; the frame carries a stippled band beside each handle, brass discs for the coordinates and a waved edge. The pieces are openwork castings in one gold tone, told apart by their bases — white for one army, turquoise for the other.

Under the lid there is a second field, cut in line work with a sun wheel in each half, waiting for checkers of your own; the chess pieces are what ship with it. Closed on its bronze hinges and clasps, the two handles line up and the board carries in one hand.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? The pieces are cast metal — pierced and beaded all over, dense in the hand — each fixed to a turned resin base, white for one army and turquoise for the other. The turquoise in the squares is resin poured and polished flush with the pale beech, the handles are cut through the frame, and the points inside are cut in line work. Nothing is printed.

Are backgammon checkers included? No. This set ships with the 32 chess pieces; the inside is cut as a backgammon field, so a set of checkers and dice of your own turns it into a two-game board.
