The full coat of arms of Armenia — eagle and lion holding the shield of Ararat over sword, quill, wheat and broken chain — is carved in a beaded roundel at the centre of this walnut Armenian backgammon set, with a small cast-metal emblem of the same arms set into a roundel at each end and a lattice-cut ground between. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

The other outer face of the wooden backgammon board carries the same two metal emblems either side of a chequered panel lettered A to H and 1 to 8 along its edges. Both faces are unstained walnut with a border of small stamped stars, and the lattice is drilled with a dot at every crossing.

Inside, the arms appear again as a fine incised drawing in each half, the points are incised with arrow tips, the end rails are cut in a row of arches and every corner has a long dice recess. Thirty-two wooden checkers and a pair of dice are included.

Are the emblems real metal? Yes — the four small emblems are cast metal with a dark bronze-coloured finish, let into carved roundels; the large arms in the centre are carved walnut in relief over a stippled ground. The arms inside are incised lines, not raised.
