Light against lighter: the dark squares of this chess set are pearly white epoxy with a lilac vein, poured into pale wood, so the contrast comes from sheen rather than colour. A flat 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ slab on a cast brass foot at each corner, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces and a bag.

Each white square on this wooden chess set is a separate pour, clouding like mother-of-pearl and polished flush with the honey and pale wood around it, and the coordinates sit in round discs with brass rims and figures along a border of the same wood. The four feet are cast in relief and cap the corners, lifting the board a finger's width off the table.

The pieces bring the only real dark to the set: turned wood, sixteen pale and sixteen stained brown, the kings tipped with a contrasting finial and scaled to the small squares. No hinge and no fold — this is a solid board that lives on a desk or a side table rather than in a drawer.
