A brass knot star sits in a round recess at each end of this travel chess set, on a frame covered edge to edge in a diamond lattice. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech in a mid-brown stain, with 32 turned pieces, a felt-lined inside and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that fits on a desk and still looks dressed. The lattice is cut as a fine diamond net with a small dot at every crossing, running from the squares out to an outline that waves on all four sides, and the star at each end is an interlaced twelve-point casting in brass tone, set into a recess lined with the same net. The coordinates sit in brass discs beside the inlaid squares, and the 32 pieces are turned in pale wood and dark.

Closed, the two halves meet on bronze hinges and clasps at half the open width; opened the other way, each half is a well lined in plain black felt, so the pieces ride without knocking. There is no second game inside — this is a chess set only — and the bag takes the lot.
