The borders of this chess board are wide — wider than they need to be — and every inch of them is worked in crisp relief: ornament in the corners, ribbon scrolls running between them, and a crown cut at the head of the board with a banner beneath it. Pale maple takes the detail sharply, so the shadows sit exactly where the carver put them. You do not glance at a carved chess set like this. You lean in.

The pieces answer the board. Thirty-two of them, turned in wood and finished with cast bronze at the crown of each, so the whole army carries the same idea as the border rather than sitting on it like a borrowed set.
