Royal blue, marbled like lapis, fills the dark squares of this travel chess set — epoxy poured into a pale unstained beech board with a plain square edge and brass coordinate discs — and it folds shut into a felt-lined case. 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that proves a small board need not be a cheap one. Each blue square is its own pour, swirling between cobalt and navy and polished level with the wood, and the pale beech round it is left plain but for a scored line and the brass coordinate discs — nothing on the frame to compete with the colour. The 32 pieces are turned in pale wood and dark, sized to the squares.

Two bronze hinges take the fold and one clasp holds it shut; inside, each half is a well of black felt, so the pieces travel inside the board and never loose in the bag. It goes in a rucksack without a thought and looks right on a shelf between trips.
