Marbled red epoxy fills the dark squares of this chess set, poured flush into a solid slab of pale wood with a carved diamond lattice round the field, brass discs for the coordinates and a cast brass foot at each corner. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces and a wooden box.

This is the wooden chess set that does not fold and does not move. The slab is thick and dense, the red is poured square by square so each one clouds differently between brick and cherry, and the pale wood between the pours keeps its grain running straight through the field. A fine lattice is cut round the squares, a moulded lip finishes the edge, and the four feet are cast brass in a scrolled pattern that lifts the board off the table.

The 32 pieces are turned in two woods — pale for one side, a figured red-brown for the other, with carved horse-head knights — and they ship in a wooden box with a black felt insert cut to hold each one, the board resting on top. Set it out once and leave it there.
