Red resin inside a braid: the dark squares of this luxury chess set are marbled red epoxy poured into pale unstained beech, and round the whole frame runs a wide braid of four flat strands weaving over and under on a stippled ground. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set where old pattern meets new colour and neither gives way. The strands are broad and rounded, each dipping under the next, and the stippling between them turns the ground matt so the braid reads as the only smooth thing on the frame; the red squares are separate pours, clouding between scarlet and brick, polished level with the wood. The edge is straight with a moulded lip, the coordinates sit on brass discs, and the pieces are turned in pale wood and dark.

Bronze hinges fold it to half its width and clasps hold it shut; the reverse is cut as a backgammon field in line work, lattice-filled points round a sun wheel in each half with a trough down either side, and it ships with the chess pieces only. Full size on the table, half of it on the shelf.
