Luxury Red Epoxy Chess Set with Interlace Border
Two strong ideas meet on this board and somehow agree with each other. The dark squares are poured in deep red epoxy resin against pale wood — bold, modern, impossible to ignore — and around them runs a hand-carved interlaced border, strand over strand, all the way round the 23.6" / 60 cm field. Ancient pattern, contemporary colour, one object.
The interlace is the part that takes the time. Every crossing has to stay even or the eye catches it immediately, and on a border this long there are a great many crossings. It is the sort of work that does not announce itself from across a room but rewards anyone who leans in. Full playing size, brass coordinate markers, 32 turned pieces in beech and walnut — and it still folds in half to 11.8 x 23.6" when the game is done.
