Luxury Carved Pomegranate Armenian Backgammon Table — Handmade in Armenia

Two pomegranates are carved at the centre of the lid on this luxury Armenian backgammon table, one whole and one split open to a cluster of red seeds, with leaves round them inside a beaded ring; a cast brass pomegranate sits in a round recess at each end and a third on the apron. On cabriole legs, 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

Closed, the wooden backgammon table is a side table: beaded bands frame the lid in a lobed panel, carved lattice fills the corners, the apron and the leg knees, and a felt-lined compartment waits under the swinging top. Unfolded, the field carries pale inlaid points with arrowhead tips, a fluted sun-wheel ringed with scrolls in each half, a vine band on the rails and a recess at each corner for the dice cup.

The checkers are turned wood in pale and dark sets with ringed tops, the dice are bone-white, and the legs unbolt so the table packs into its own plywood crate.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? It is. The pomegranates and leaves are relief carved from the lid itself with the seeds picked out in red, the beads and lattice are cut into the beech, the points and sun-wheels inside are inlaid, and the three small pomegranates are cast brass. The top is hinged: swing it aside for the compartment or unfold it flat for the game. Nothing is printed.
