Open a hand fan and the whole thing blooms at once — that is what the master carver did to this entire board. A grand fan of acanthus leaves and carved ornaments spreads across the face of this walnut backgammon set in deep relief, radiating from edge to edge like a sunrise held in wood.
Acanthus is the carver's oldest test — the leaf that has crowned columns since antiquity — and here it is passed with honors, every curl undercut deep enough to hold shadow. Cut into solid walnut, the wood the workshop saves for its masterworks, the relief reads differently at noon and by lamplight, which is exactly why you will keep looking.
Inside waits a full 23.6" / 60 cm nardi field — a handmade wooden backgammon board beneath a masterpiece lid. Fans were made for grand entrances. So was this.
