A crown sits in a shield-shaped cartouche on one face of this luxury backgammon set and an eight-point star inside an octagon on the other, each on a lattice ground with broad acanthus scrolls curling round it, the whole outline of the board shaped in curves rather than cut square. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden backgammon set that goes for depth over detail: the scrolls are cut as thick, rounded leaves that stand well off the ground, the lattice behind the crown and the star is scored fine so the emblems read clearly, a dotted band follows the shaped edge, and the whole board is finished in a dark, glossy varnish that shows the beech grain through it. Small brass clasps hold it shut.

Inside, the dark wood is plain: points scored as narrow triangles with a small ring at each tip, an eight-point star drawn at the centre of each half, a row of stippled roundels along each end and a trough beneath them for the checkers and dice.
