Seven stepped diamonds run down the centre of this luxury backgammon set, framed by raised mouldings and bands of carved chevrons that step out to the edge, the pale sapwood of the walnut showing along the rim. Named Khent, it is carved the same on both faces. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden backgammon set that works in straight lines: nothing curls, everything steps. The diamonds and chevrons stand in low relief on a stippled ground, the frames between them are crisp, square-edged mouldings, and the brown of the heartwood grades into cream sapwood at the edges so no two bands are quite the same colour. Small brass clasps hold it shut.

Inside, the walnut is plain and figured: points drawn as looped arrow outlines, a knot of four diamonds at the centre of each half, arched scallops at each end and a trough beneath them for the checkers.
