The outline of Russia, cut in pale wood and set into a dark roundel, sits at the centre of this carved Russian backgammon set, with a cast-metal double-headed eagle in a smaller roundel at each end, a fine lattice covering the rest of the lid and a cut-out carry handle through the top edge. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

The map is a flat inlay, so the country reads as a clean silhouette against the stippled ground; the eagles are dark-toned metal with the crowns and shield in relief. On the other outer face of the wooden backgammon board the same two eagles flank a chequered panel of pale and dark squares.

Open, the map and the eagle appear again in pale inlay — Russia on one half, the double-headed eagle on the other — above pale inlaid points with arrow tips, with rope-carved handle bars at the sides and corner dice recesses. Thirty-two wooden checkers and a pair of dice are included.
