A faceted eight-pointed star is the whole motif of this wooden travel backgammon set: it sits in a rope-rimmed roundel at the centre of a diamond-lattice oval on the wavy-edged lid, with stippled corners and a grip cut through the top edge. 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Each of the eight points is cut as two sloping facets, so the star catches the light differently from every side of the table, and the lattice around it is cut diamond by diamond out to the rope rim. On the other face an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares sits between two carved fan shells, and the grip runs through both halves so the closed board carries like a small case.

Inside, the star appears again — a smaller eight-pointed star incised into the middle of each half between the drop-shaped points — with shallow rests along the end rails and two plain hinges on the spine. 32 wooden checkers and a dice set come with it, and two small clasps close the front.
