A plain lid, a wavy edge and a grip cut through the top: that is the whole outside of this classic wooden backgammon set, dark-stained beech polished until the grain shows, with an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares on the other face. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

It is the board for people who want the game and the wood and nothing else. The stain is a deep red-brown, the long rays of the grain run across the lid like brushstrokes, and the scalloped grip runs through both halves so the closed board carries like a slim case to wherever the evening is.

Inside, drop-shaped points are incised into each half around a ring of scrolls, the checkers rest in troughs along the rails, and two plain hinges on the spine fold the halves flat behind two small front clasps. 32 wooden checkers and a dice set come with it.
