A pale-wood map of Georgia, regions outlined and საქართველო lettered above, sits on a cross-hatched oval in the lid of this Georgian backgammon set, framed by leaf scrolls with grapes at one corner and a pomegranate roundel at the other. A cut-out carry handle runs through each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Turned over, the board shows a second finished face: pale and dark squares inlaid as a chequered panel, a carved vine-leaf roundel on each side of it.

Open, each half carries an inlaid coat of arms of Georgia, two lions round the crowned shield above a motto ribbon, between inlaid fleur-tipped points, with side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. The pale and dark checkers, two dice and the carrying bag are all photographed.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Do grapevines run right round the map? No — the old copy had a full wreath of vines. The photos show one bunch of grapes with a vine leaf at the top-left corner and a pomegranate in a roundel at the top-right; the frame between them is leaf scrolls. The inlaid coat of arms inside was never mentioned before.

How do I look after it? Lift dust out of the relief with a soft brush and wipe the flat faces with a dry cloth. Keep it away from direct sun and radiators; store it closed with the checkers inside, in the bag.
