A band of fleur-de-lis runs round the field of this chess set, carved in relief on a stippled ground between beaded lines, with the dark squares poured in marbled blue epoxy. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from pale beech, with 32 turned wooden pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for players who find most folding boards too small. The squares are big enough for the pieces to stand clear of each other, the blue is poured square by square and polished flush with the pale wood, and the coordinates sit in brass discs along the inner edge. Round that, the lilies stand in an unbroken band on all four sides, with a leaf scroll filling each corner.

Pale, unstained and square-edged, the board halves on bronze hinges and shuts on two clasps. Turn it over and open it and you find a backgammon field carved into the inside — points in line-work, a sun wheel in each half. Checkers are not included; the set is sold with the chess pieces.

Is the border carved or pressed? Carved. Every lily in the band is cut into the beech in relief with the ground stippled behind it, and the beaded lines and corner scrolls are cut the same way. The blue squares are epoxy resin poured into the wood and polished level, and the coordinates are brass discs. Nothing is printed.

Are backgammon checkers included? No — this set ships with the 32 chess pieces. The inside is carved as a backgammon field, so checkers and dice of your own turn it into a second game.
