Luxury Walnut Backgammon Set - Haghartsin Monastery
Haghartsin is the one you come upon rather than arrive at. It stands in the forest above Dilijan, and the trees are so close that you are almost at the walls before the 13th-century monastery resolves itself out of the green. That is what this luxury walnut backgammon set carves: the clustered domes and steep roofs of Haghartsin, cut in deep relief, with trailing grapevines and heavy grape clusters winding around it — the forest doing what the forest actually does there.
Walnut is the right wood for it. Dilijan is all shade and old growth, and walnut carries that same deep brown quiet; the carving reads differently at noon than it does under a lamp, which is exactly how the building behaves among its trees. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is waiting underneath — rather less contemplative, considerably louder, and just as Armenian. Lift it by the cut-out handle and take it wherever the evening is.
