The whole outer panel is cut in deep relief — a large ornament at the centre with scrollwork unwinding around it and a beaded edge running the rim — deep enough that the shadows shift as you walk past it. Most boards are decorated on the border. This one is carved across the face, which is a different order of work entirely.

Open it and the object changes twice over. A full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field in maple and walnut appears, framed by a hand-carved border, and inside that a backgammon layout with its points cut into the wood. So it is a chess backgammon set in the truest sense: three things in one hinged case, none of them an afterthought. The army is bronze and wood together, 32 ornate pieces with sculpted crowns on pale bases, framed by bronze coordinate markers.

At 8 kg it has the weight you would expect and, unexpectedly, a handle cut into the folded edge — so the grandest board in the room still closes to 23.6 x 11.8" / 60 x 30 cm and goes back in its bag when the night ends. That combination, showpiece carving and honest working design, is rarer than either on its own.
