St George between two lions under a crown — the coat of arms of Georgia — is cast in metal and set into a round recess at each end of this travel chess and backgammon set, on a frame covered in dotted lattice. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with pieces, checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set for the Georgian table. The arms are a small cast-metal disc, lions and shield in relief, set into a recess lined with the same lattice that covers the rest of the frame — a fine diamond net with a dot at every crossing, out to an edge that waves in scallops. The coordinates sit on brass discs beside the inlaid squares, and the 32 pieces are turned in pale wood and dark.

Open it and the backgammon field is inside: pale points tipped with a fleur-de-lis, a sun wheel ringed in scrollwork at the centre of each half, carved arches at the ends. Checkers and dice go in the bag with the chess pieces; the board folds in half on bronze hinges and clasps.
