Flying Eagle Backgammon Set with Handle — Handmade in Armenia

An eagle drops through the rope-bordered roundel of this carved backgammon set with both wings raised, talons open and every wing feather cut as its own ridge, over a stippled ground with a lobed panel to either side and a diamond lattice covering the rest of the lid. A cut-out carry handle passes through the top edge of each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

Turned over, the wooden backgammon board shows a chequered panel inlaid in pale and dark squares, with a carved whorl in the lobed panel at each end and the lattice around it.

The playing side is inlaid in pale wood — arrow-tipped points and an interlaced roundel in each half — with a small arcade along the far edge, cut-out grips in the rails and a dice recess in every corner. Thirty-two wooden checkers and a pair of dice come with the set.

Is the eagle at full span? Not quite — the old listing said full wingspan, but the wings are raised and angled back as the bird comes down with its talons open, which reads as a strike rather than a glide. Relief carving over stippling; the points and roundels inside are pale wood inlays.
