Basket weave is carved over every surface of this luxury chess table — the border round the inlaid field, the apron, the knees of the cabriole legs — with acanthus scrolls at the corners and drawers for the 32 gold-toned bronze pieces. It is 60 × 60 × 68 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ × 26.8″, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess table that looks woven. The strips of the weave pass over and under each other in relief, with dotted texture in the gaps, and the top is shaped in a soft serpentine on all four sides with a scroll cartouche at the centre of each edge. The coordinates sit on brass roundels; the drawer fronts carry the same weave and a brass pendant pull.

The pieces are openwork castings in a gold tone — crowned kings and queens, horse-head knights, pierced bishops and rooks — on turned wooden bases, pale for one side and dark for the other. They live in the drawers; the legs bolt on after delivery and the table ships flat.
