Four eagles hold up this luxury chess table — one carved at the knee of each cabriole leg, over a claw foot — and a fifth spreads its wings in an oval panel at each end. Three drawers hold 32 gold-toned bronze pieces. 60 × 60 × 70 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ × 27.6″, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden chess table with the most carving of anything we sell. The top is shaped in a soft serpentine on all four sides, acanthus scrolls run round the border to the inlaid field, the coordinates sit on brass roundels, and the apron below is carved to match with a brass pendant pull on the front drawer. Each leg is a separate piece of sculpture.

Three drawers — one at the front, one each side — hold the army: openwork cast pieces in a gold tone on turned wooden bases, pale for one side and red-brown for the other. The legs bolt on after delivery, so the table ships safely and stands square in a few minutes.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the eagle carved into the top, or applied? Carved. The oval panel with the eagle is cut into the border at each end of the top, and the eagle heads on the legs are carved from the leg itself, feathers and all, down to the claw gripping the ball at the foot. Nothing is glued on.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Dust the carving with a soft brush, wipe the bronze with a dry cloth and keep the pieces in the drawers.
