Luxury Eagle Heads Backgammon Table — Handmade in Armenia

An eagle's head in profile, beak hooked and eye sharp, is carved in a round frame at the centre of the lid on this luxury backgammon table, a cast brass eagle at each end and another on the apron; each cabriole leg carries its own eagle head at the knee, feathers running down to a clawed foot. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

The wooden backgammon table closes into a side table: carved lattice over the lid, apron and leg knees, moulded edges, and a felt-lined compartment beneath the swinging top. Open, it unfolds flat across the frame to a field of pale inlaid points with arrowhead tips, a fluted sun-wheel ringed with scrolls in each half, a vine band along the rails and a recess at each corner for the dice cup.

It comes with turned wooden checkers in pale and dark sets, a dark dice cup and two dice; the four eagle legs unbolt and the table ships in its own plywood crate.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? It is. The head on the lid is relief carved from the top, each leg's eagle, feathers and claws are carved from the leg itself, the lattice and vine band are cut into the beech, the points and sun-wheels inside are inlaid, and the small eagles are cast brass. Nothing is printed.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Dust the carving with a soft brush, wipe the flat wood with a dry cloth and keep the checkers in the compartment beneath the top.
