The eagle is not confined to the lid on this one. A large carved eagle's head sits at the centre of the closed top with two smaller bronze eagles either side of it — and then the birds carry on down the legs, which are cut with eagle heads at the knee and feathered talons where the feet meet the floor. It is the most sculptural table in the range, and it does not pretend otherwise.

Open it flat and there is a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field with 32 checkers in beech and walnut, a dice cup and dice. Fifteen kilos of solid beech, at proper height, on legs that were carved rather than turned. This is what a backgammon table is for: the game is permanently ready, at the right level, in a piece of furniture nobody would move out of the way.
