Eagle Head and Eight-Pointed Stars Backgammon Set with Handle — Handmade in Armenia

Beak hooked and feathers cut one over another, an eagle's head in profile fills the rope-bordered roundel at the centre of this carved backgammon set. An eight-pointed star sits in a smaller roundel on either side, a diamond lattice covers the ground between them and a cut-out carry handle passes through the top edge of each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

The wooden backgammon board's second face has a chequered panel whose pale squares each carry a small carved flower, framed by two panels of leaf scrolls on the same lattice ground.

Inside, the eight-pointed star returns as a pale-wood inlay at the centre of each half, between pale inlaid points with arrow tips; cut-out grips sit in the side rails with a dice recess at each corner. Thirty-two wooden checkers and a pair of dice are included.

Is the eagle inside an octagon? No — the old listing put the eagle at the heart of an octagonal star, but the photos show the eagle's head in a round roundel with a separate eight-pointed star on each side of it. We have renamed the board to say what is actually carved.

How do I look after it? Brush the carving with a soft dry brush and wipe the flat surfaces with a dry cloth. Keep the board out of direct sun and store it closed with the checkers inside.
