Small enough for hand luggage and red enough to find in it: the dark squares of this travel chess set are marbled red epoxy poured into pale unstained beech, with a carry handle cut through each end. 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that gets the full-size treatment at a third of the size. Each square is its own pour, clouding between scarlet and brick and polished level with the wood; the coordinates sit on brass discs, the edge waves in scallops, and the ends carry a hand-punched band either side of the handle. The 32 pieces are turned in pale wood and dark, sized to the squares.

Closed, the two handles line up and the board carries like a small case; opened flat the other way, a second field is cut in line work under the lid, a sun wheel in each half — checkers of your own turn it into a two-game board, since only the chess pieces ship with it.

The red is epoxy resin poured into each square and polished level with the pale beech, so it is part of the board rather than a coating; the handles are cut through the frame, the end bands are punched by hand, the coordinates are brass discs, and the points inside are cut in line work. Nothing is printed.

Are backgammon checkers included? No. This set ships with the 32 chess pieces; the inside is cut as a backgammon field in line work, so a set of checkers and dice of your own turns it into a two-game board.
