A running wave of C-scrolls circles the chessboard of this travel chess set, with a band of carved cross-stitches outside it and an outline that waves in scallops all round. 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech in a warm brown stain, with 32 turned pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that carries two borders in the space of one. The inner band is a chain of C-scrolls rolling the same way round all four sides, cut in relief; the outer band is a row of X-shaped stitches between two waved lines, cut in line work, so the frame reads as pattern from a distance and as knife work up close. The coordinates are carved beside the inlaid squares, and the 32 pieces are turned in pale wood and dark.

It folds to half its width on bronze hinges and a clasp, and the inside is carved as a backgammon field in line work — twelve looped points in each half with a scalloped rail at the end — though the set ships with the chess pieces only. Small enough for a bag, wide enough to play properly.
